NH Special Education & Dyslexia 

You don't have to navigate this alone. Here are quick tips to help you right now, plus trusted, free resources and a little about why dyslexia and literacy are where my heart is.

My Top Tips for Every IEP Meeting

  1. Request documents prior to the IEP meeting.

  2. Bring a support person.

  3. NH allows 14 days to sign the IEP, you don't have to decide on the spot.

  4. Follow up in writing after every meeting.

  5. Keep copies of everything.

  6. You are an equal member of the IEP team, your voice matters just as much as the district's.

Free Resources for Special Education in NH

Parent Information Center
picnh.org
NH's Parent Information Center is grant-funded and free to families. I worked here myself, and I love that they provide free help. They have a free intake line, call and tell them your situation, and they'll give you advice, with unlimited follow-up calls. They also run free workshops focused on special education, and in the spring, an intensive Parent Advocate Training Program. See upcoming events at picnh.org/events.

 

New Hampshire Family Voices
nhfv.org
NH Family Voices is grant-funded and offers free intake calls for parents with questions on the medical side of raising a child with disabilities. A parent with lived experience, someone who has navigated a child's medical needs themselves, will talk through your situation with you. They also run a lending library of disability-related books for kids and parents, with no shipping costs.

Find your area agency
Area Agencies aren't just for Early Intervention. Some have staff who attend IEP meetings or help families navigate special education. They also offer financial resources like respite care and camperships, this isn't income-based, it's a community resource, so it's always worth reaching out and applying to see what you qualify for.
